Icelandic Countryside

Icelandic Countryside

While we based in Reykjavik, with a rental car we drove around the Icelandic countryside taking in waterfalls, natural formations, geysers, glaciers, mountains, and more.

Gulfloss, Iceland

One of the stops in the Golden Circle, the waterfalls of Gulfloss were spectacular to behold!

Thingvellir, Iceland

This is the spot where the European and North American continents meet !

Snaefellsnes Penninsula

Saw a lot on our overnight trip to the Snaefellsnes Penninsula-

  • seals sunning themselves on the beach
  • cliff formations
  • moss houses (see above)
  • insane sheep in insane locations
  • the volcano/glacier that led to the center of the earth in Jules Verne's novel of the same name
  •  me, crossing said volcano (Snaefellsjokull) in a VW Polo, up and down extremely steep dirt passes, thinking at least twice that we wouldn't make it and somehow not getting any dings or paying extra on the rental agreement!
  • the northern lights (know its not the best picture ever but considering I woke up in the middle of the night to close the window and there they were, can't really beat it!)

The Great Geysir

I have never seen a geyser before and this one was so impressive.

Spotted on the journey...

Reykjavik, Iceland

Reykjavik, Iceland

First of all, driving in Iceland is like driving on another planet- weird rock formations, steam pouring out of the ground, and absolutely no people.

But Reykjavik itself is awesome, good food (especially the lobster chowder at the harbor, and all those great hot dogs!) free art, and very friendly people.

We made it our home base for touring Iceland all except for one night on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula .

Chicago, Illinois

Chicago, Illinois

A drawing tour of Chicago on a hot August weekend, stops for gold coast hot dogs and (despite the heat) deep dish pizza - an excellent time! I also toured the Art Institute of Chicago, the Navy Pier, the Shedd Aquarium, and viewed a taping of "Wait, Wait Don;t Tell Me. "

Milan, Italy

Milan, Italy

Milan was beautiful. The best parts were:

  • seeing live flamingos in someone's courtyard.
  • grapefruit AND kiwi gelato
  • climbing to the top of the duomo
  • risotto!

Arles, France

Arles, France

Arles in the south of France is where Vincent set off to establish the "Studio of the South" It is the home of the famous yellow house (bombed in WWII and now a pizza place), the site of many famous works and the unsavory ear cutting incident.

I went to Arles specifically to see the places where Vincent worked and the site of some of my many favorite paintings. Much of it is unchanged in the passing years, below are some of my photos from now compared to some of his work back in 1888.

Como, Italy

Como, Italy

Well we didn't see George Clooney but Lake Como was beautiful anyways! The weather was supposed to be rainy but the sun came out and the skies cleared up as soon as we got to town.
